Authorities say a 62-year-old woman was shot by a Howard County police officer after she created a disturbance in her apartment.

Police were called to Pearl Wardell Harris' apartment in the 8600 block of Snowden River Parkway about 4:20 p.m. Wednesday by the property managers because Harris was acting erratically.

Officers tried to talk to the woman and felt physically threatened, officials said. One officer fired a single shot, striking Harris in the lower torso. She was taken to Shock Trauma.

A knife was seized from the scene, police said. The unidentified officer was placed on administrative leave.
