SUDLERSVILLE, Md. - A Maryland community is mourning the death of their fire chief.
Charles 'Buck' Clough died Wednesday night on a country road near Sudlersville while responding to a call for a small fire in an appliance. For some reason, unknown to investigators at this time, Clough lost control of his truck and hit a tree.
"Any firefighter and EMS provider in the state runs that risk. Yes, he was responding to a call; he was doing his duty to his community," said Queen Anne's County Emergency Services Chief Kevin Aftung. "This community loved him and he loved the community. He was doing his best to try and protect the community."
Clough, 41, was married and had two sons, all active in the volunteer fire company. He lived his whole life in the tiny town with one gas station and one restaurant. In fact, the fire company is a focal point for almost everybody in Sudlersville, and Clough was its unquestioned heart and soul.
"The community should realize what a huge huge crater he leaves behind. His service [was] unbelievable," Chief Aftung added.
