ARLINGTON, Va. - With just six weeks until Virginia's Democratic primary, former DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe has a commanding lead over his two rivals for the incumbent party's gubernatorial nomination, an exclusive poll finds. But it also finds all three Democratic gubernatorial candidates would lose to the likely Republican nominee, former Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell.
A SurveyUSA poll conducted for WJLA-TV found McAuliffe with 38 percent of the Democratic primary vote. State Senator Creigh Deeds (Bath County) and former state Del. Brian Moran (Alexandria (web | news) ) were tied at 22 percent. Eighteen percent of the 409 likely primary voters who were polled were undecided. The poll's margin of error was plus or minus 4.9 percent.
But 64 percent of likely Democratic primary voters say they may change their mind -- making any outcome possible, the survey found.
McAuliffe, who ran Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign, runs strongest in the Hampton Roads area. Moran, who represented a Northern Virginia district in the state House of Delegates for 12 years, leads 2:1 in Northeast VA.
But the poll indicates problems for Democratic candidates in the general election.
The poll indicated McDonnell would defeat Deeds 44%-39%, McAuliffe 46%-39%, and Moran 46%-34%. Nineteen percent of registered voters who were polled remained undecided.
Virginia's incumbent Democratic Governor, Tim Kaine, is term limited, and not seeking re-election.
