D.C. Officials Push Forward With Oak Hill Plans
posted 5:38 am Wed May 02, 2007 - LAUREL, Md.
D.C. officials say opposition from Anne Arundel County won't stop their plans for a new youth detention center near Fort Meade.
County and Maryland officials have been pushing to acquire the 880-acre site of the Oak Hill Youth Detention Center for a regional park and other uses. But D.C. officials say they hope to finish a new center for about 60 troubled youths by next year. The plans have been in the works since at least 2005.
The federally owned property is being used by the city under a land grant. It's mostly vacant, except for Oak Hill, plagued by poor living conditions, overcrowding and security problems. The city is under court order to close it by 2009.
Maryland Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski have introduced a bill to force the District to move its detention center to the city and have the land split between the county and the National Security Agency.
