Red Tape Delayed Sprinklers at Eastern Market

D.C. fire officials say plans to put sprinklers at Eastern Market have been in the works for years, but they've ben slowed by bureaucratic red tape.
Fire Chief Dennis Rubin says the electrical fire that gutted the 134-year-old market early Monday would have been controlled by a sprinkler system - possibly by just one sprinkler head.
Members of a community advisory committee say they recommended three years ago that the city-owned landmark get a sprinkler system. But city officials say they decided to put off a wiring upgrade and sprinklers so it could be part of an overall restoration of the market - slated to begin this summer.
Now the fire has ballooned a planned $3 million renovation into a $30 million reconstruction project.
Mayor Adrian Fenty says electrical and sprinkler systems are still in the plans. He hopes the market will be open again in two years or less.
