Capitol Architect Agrees to Fix Asbestos Problem
posted 5:27 am Thu May 10, 2007 - WASHINGTON
The Architect of the Capitol has agreed to correct safety issues in tunnels where workers contend they have been exposed to dangerous conditions, including asbestos.
It's part of a settlement with the independent agency that enforces safety rules for Capitol Hill workers.
The Office of Compliance says it has complained about the tunnels since 2000, but the architect hasn't addressed them. Under the settlement, the architect must fix safety and health hazards within five years. The Office of Compliance will have someone monitoring the agreement full-time and can to go to court to enforce the terms.
Ten tunnel workers have been complaining for years about conditions in the utility tunnels, including falling concrete and temperatures as high as 160 degrees. Nine of them say they've been told by doctors that their lungs show evidence of exposure to asbestos.
One man who's worked in the tunnels for 23 years says the settlement lets the Architect of the Capitol off easy.
