A 19-year-old female midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy died after her roommates found her unconscious and not breathing in her bed.

Classmates at the Academy in Annapolis, Md., found Kristen Dickmann of Kennett Square unconscious in her Bancroft Hall room Monday morning.

Authorities say she was pronounced dead shortly after noon at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Kristen Dickmann's mother, Carrie Dickmann, says the coroner's office hasn't determined what caused her death.

Kristen was a 2007 graduate of Unionville High School, where she was the volleyball team captain for two years. The midshipman was one of two freshmen on the Academy's volleyball team and was expected to compete for a starting post this fall.

Kristen had a positive attitude and a smile. Her mother says an academy superior once assigned her to write jokes, and when that failed, to do calculus problems to try to stop her from smiling so much.
