WASA is looking into whether as many as six water main breaks, including a leaking fire hydrant, in Southeast D.C. Monday night are related to work at the Fort Stanton Reservoir.
The broken hydrant flooded an apartment building at Atlantic Street and Valley Avenue, SE, forcing the tenants to leave. Crews had to help an elderly woman get out.
"Situation was going on downstairs, where it was flooding from here, the basement, up to there," said one resident while gesturing to the basement and the first floor of the building.
WASA reports there were also broken mains at Bryan Place and Morris Rd., SE; Morris Road and Mt. View Place, SE; 18th Street and Minnesota Avenue, SE; F Street between Texas Avenue and Hilltop Terrace, SE; and at 4th Street and Mississippi Avenue, SE, near Simon Elementary School.
Students from Simon were sent to Hart Elementary School, one block away.
Repair crews speculate that the sudden ruptures could be related to pressure problems perhaps caused by repair work at the Fort Stanton Reservoir. WASA was refilling the reservoir Monday night after cleaning it and making repairs.
"I think that's what it was," said D.C. resident Gregory Bolden. "So much water coming down Atlantic Street, you could swim in it. It was like a pool."
The fire department has set up a command bus near 14th and W streets, SE, to help residents. WASA warns residents in the area to expect service disruptions while crews make repairs.
