Governor Martin O'Malley says the state will be forced to make "a lot of unpopular choices" if a referendum on slot machine gambling fails in November. O'Malley talked about the importance of legalizing slots in a radio interview on WCBC in Cumberland. He says the money Maryland will eventually make from slot machines makes up about 25 percent of what's needed to balance the state's budget. The rest of the money comes from about $1.4 billion in tax increases approved last year and more than $1 billion in budget cuts. O'Malley says he thinks residents understand the fiscal importance of supporting slots, and he's hopeful they'll vote for them.
