Rainy weather is holding up crews working to repair a sinkhole that shut down Jones Mill Road on Wednesday.
Crews worked through the night to fill in the sinkhole that was created by a broken 16-inch water main. The road was expected to be repaved Thursday morning, but rainy weather held things up.
Jones Mill Road has reopened, but ongoing construction has slowed traffic on the major thoroughfare. But many resident prefer the slow going to Wednesday's closure.
"Yesterday was terrible," said commuter Jacqueline Serrano. "I was in Friendship Heights yesterday and it took one hour to get to Silver Spring."
"Oh, it was horrible," added commuter Regina Sakaria. "The fact that there was a light off at East-West highway and Connecticut, the traffic that was trying to divert just got stuck again."
The rupture woke Raife Petersen early Wednesday morning. "All of a sudden the pipes in our house started vibrating. You could hear it reverberating throughout the house," said Peterson. "We went downstairs and from our porch you could see it was a geyser."
The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission shut off water in the area for 18 hours until repairs were made. Service was restored early Thursday.
Twenty-four gallons of bottled water were delivered to all customers in the effected area.
Karen Rumble had to do without water after 9 a.m. Wednesday.
"It is an inconvenience, but we hope they'll get the job straight," said Rumble.
