D.C.'s street sweeping machines soon will be outfitted with cameras that can scan license plates and generate parking citations.

Legislation approved Tuesday by the D.C. Council will put cameras on the city's 20 street sweepers as early as this summer.

The cameras will generate $30 tickets for those who violate parking restrictions on street-cleaning routes.

D.C. Department of Public Works spokeswoman Linda Grant says each camera will cost about $36,000. The cameras will be tested for 45 days on two street sweepers before the rest of the fleet is equipped.
