Hundreds of traffic lights in the Washington area are being equipped with backup power systems so that the lights stay on even if the electricity goes out.
The Virginia Department of Transportation says 175 traffic signal intersections have been upgraded with the technology.
Most are in Fredericksburg, but there are some in Fairfax and Culpeper counties. There also are plans to install the devices along the Route 1 corridor between Fairfax and Prince William counties.
VDOT is telling its traffic engineers that all new intersections should come with the devices.
There is a similar program in Maryland, where the State Highway Administration is using backup battery systems with traffic signals.
