Transportation officials say they have finished weekend work at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge as they prepare to open a second span of the $2.5 billion project.

Crews had been working since Friday to shift lanes on the Capital Beltway's outer loop to align with the new bridge.

Cars heading toward the bridge from Virginia into Maryland were funneled into one lane near the Telegraph Road exit. Several highway ramps in the area also were closed. Traffic backed up for about a mile.

According to officials, as of 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, all three lanes and ramps of the Wilson Bridge are open.

The second span of the new Wilson Bridge will open to traffic the last weekend of the month. The first span opened in the summer of 2006.
