An eighth grader in Fairfax County (web|news) took action and voiced her concerns to end child abuse.
Alexamarie Allen was doing research on the internet when she came across the story of Kelsey Briggs, a child who died of abuse before her third birthday. Alexamarie Allen couldn't keep the heart-wrenching story out of her mind.
"She really touched my heart" said Alexandre, "It's not right! I just knew I had to do something to help children like Kelsey and stop them from being hurt!"
She began by making flyers and blue ribbons and brought attention to the cause at the school she attended, Glasgow Middle School, and to her friends. Many of Alexamarie's friends and teachers participated in making flyers.
In April, Alexamarie organized a fundraiser, coinciding with the Child Abuse Awareness month, armed with the homemade posters, flyers and ribbons.
The money raised will go to SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) of Northern Virginia, a non-profit organization.
