Governor Tim Kaine faced a divided crowd in Woodbridge Tuesday night in his first attempt to sell his one-billion dollar a year tax package to the public.
Kaine was blunt at times as he addressed about 250 people, saying he understands that everyone likes to pay as little in taxes as they can but that there is "no free lunch."
About half the crowd applauded when Prince William small business owner Ryan Martin told Kaine it was the wrong time to raise taxes. But more than half also applauded when someone said that the taxes Kaine is suggesting aren't that much.
The governor proposed increasing the sales tax on cars from 3 percent to 4 percent and boosting the yearly registration fee from $39 to $49. He also wants an increase in the tax assessed on home sellers statewide.
In northern Virginia and Hampton Roads, Kaine proposes boosting the sales tax from 5 cents on the dollar to 6 cents except for food and medicine.
Legislators will take up transportation funding in a special legislative session beginning June 23rd.
