District of Columbia officials have announced a deal with a developer to build a four-star, 400-room hotel on the site of the old convention center. The agreement means the city is scrapping a plan to build a new central library on the downtown site. The developer, Hines-Archstone-Smith, is already the lead developer for an $850 million mixed-use project on the former convention center site. Monday's announcement concerns the site's so-called B parcel. In addition to a hotel, the second parcel will include an additional 100,000 square feet of retail space. Hines-Archstone-Smith says the entire project will be known as CityCenter DC.
