Governor Martin O'Malley has signed bills making walking Maryland's state exercise and creating a state holiday honoring American Indians. The governor has also signed dozens of weightier bills related to public safety, including one authorizing the collection of DNA from people accused of violent crimes. The samples would be taken before people are convicted. The new laws also include tougher penalties for attending a dogfight or cockfight and a new state study of whether the death penalty should be repealed. The bills were signed today in an Annapolis ceremony attended by sponsors and advocates. O'Malley has one more bill signing planned for the year. So far, he not vetoed any bills passed during the most recent legislative session.
