Prince George's County officials say a teenage girl was seriously injured when she was thrown off a horse and then trampled.

Fire department spokesman Mark Brady says the girl was in a heavily wooded area near Bowie State University late Tuesday when the horse she was on threw her off and then struck her in the face.

He says the girl sustained serious injuries, but that they appear to be non-life threatening.

Brady says the teenager was with her mother, who contacted officials by cell phone and helped guide them to their location.

He says the girl was being flown by a state helicopter to a hospital.

Brady says it took officials about an hour to reach the teenager because of the rough terrain and recent heavy rains.
