A study commissioned by the National Park Service has found that the Tidal Basin sea wall at the Jefferson Memorial is sinking in some spots and should be repaired.
The study attributes the sinking mainly to soft soil under the wall that has compressed over the years. In some places, the wall has sunk almost a foot since being built.
The rate of sinking also seems to have increased in recent years, which might be connected to the changes in groundwater levels.
The yearlong study recommends repairs, including installing pilings through mud flats and anchoring them in bedrock far below. The repair project could cost more than $10 million.
Park service officials said they will consider the study and do more evaluation before moving forward.
