A 2004 murder has been solved by the conviction of a man in the shooting death of a 23-year-old, but the victim's mother continues her crusade for other murderers.
Valencia Mohammed, with children and friends, returned to the house where the family once lived and the spot, where in October 2004, a killer shot her 23-year-old son, Imtiaz, repeatedly as he sat in a parked car.
"I have a victory, but there are so many more out there who are crying."After two hours of deliberation, a jury convicted Raymond Thomas McCoy of first degree murder.
It is a milestone in a crusade Valencia Mohammed began on the steps of police headquarters days after the murder. "Find who killed my sons. That's what I want. Find who killed my sons." She said sons because her 14-year-old son was killed in 1999 and no arrest was made.
"I started going into the streets." She published photos of victims, organized Mothers of Unsolved Murders and helped police find witnesses. "We couldn't have done it without the witnesses."
A surviving son said they made the difference. "Soon as I was sitting there though the trial, I definitely knew there was going to be a conviction," said Mukhtar Raqid.
A family friend Ron Moten of Peaceoholics said more murders could be solved it witnesses came forward. "If people have a green light to kill, they will continue to kill."
Mohammed said she will continue to help other mothers and she's grateful to the community. "We made up 3,000 fliers when we were searching for the murderer. We'll make up another 3,000 thanking everyone, especially the witnesses, for coming out and helping us to solve the murder."
