The Washington National Cathedral isn't immune from the stock market's downturn and has laid off 15 percent of its workforce.
Associate Dean Margaret Davis says 33 people were let go Thursday as the cathedral reorganizes its operations and cuts costs.
The workers include some clergy and retail employees.
The cathedral in Northwest Washington just finished celebrating its centennial. It has been the site of dozens of high-profile services, including the funerals of former presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.
Davis says the cathedral has a budget of $26 million. But it expects to see a falloff in investment income, which accounts for 17 percent of its budget, because of the stock market's poor performance.
