A Fairfax County (web|news) teacher has been charged with assaulting a 12-year-old student.
Fairfax County police say 42-year-old Maria Waugh is accused of assaulting the student Wednesday during class at Cameron Elementary School in Alexandria (web|news) . She was released after being issued a summons Thursday for assault.
Authorities say the student reported the incident to his parents, who then contacted police. The boy was not injured.
Police say there are questions about the student's behavior leading up to the incident. No other details were released.
Waugh told The Washington Post that the student had twisted her arm and pushed her against a chair. She says she swung her arms and likely hit him.
Fairfax County Public Schools spokeswoman Mary Shaw says Waugh no longer works for the school system.
