In the new Newsweek ranking of the top public high schools in America, the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area has 16 schools in the top 100.

The list includes nine schools in Virginia, six in Maryland and one in Washington, D.C.

The list appears in the May 26 issue of Newsweek and contains 1,300 of the top schools in the nation.

The Newsweek list was compiled by dividing the number of students taking college-level exams at these schools by the number of graduating seniors.

Any school with a ration of 1.000 or higher has made its way onto the list.

The 16 schools in the area that made the list are: 

H-B Woodlawn in Arlington, Va. (No. 16)
Richard Montgomery in Rockville, Md. (No. 32)
Langley in McLean, Va. (No. 55)
George Mason in Falls Church, Va. (No. 58)
T.S. Wootton in Rockville, Md. (No. 59)
Bethesda Chevy Chase in Bethesda, Md. (No. 63)
Washington-Lee in Arlington, Va. (No. 64)
Walt Whitman in Bethesda, Md. (No. 68)
Woodson in Fairfax, Va. ( No. 73)
Yorktown in Arlington, Va. (No. 74)
Walter Johnson in Bethesda, Md. (No. 75)
Bell Multicultural in Washington, D.C. (No. 76)
Lake Braddock Secondary in Burke, Va. (No. 93)
Winston Churchill in Potomac, Md. (No. 96)
McLean in McLean, Va. (No. 97)
Clark County in Berryville, Va. (No. 48)
