The one thing that will save you the most money at the pump is changing the way you drive and experts say there are simple things you can do to keep your gas.

Arlington mechanic, Ana Levin says not taking the time to add air to you tires, could be driving you to the poor house. "Properly inflated tires make a big difference."

She also say that replacing your air filters is a must. "You should definitely check your air filter every 20 thousand miles."

This is all very good information because with gas prices spiking across the country, motorists are spending more on gas than ever before, and these tips could save you money at the pump.

"I don't know how much longer I'll be able to do it. They should do something about it," said motorist Fran Gros.

But the Alliance to Save Energy says it starts with you being more fuel efficient. experts say there simple are things you can do, to keep your gas spending under control.

"Consumers have to look in the mirror and say if I want help, I have to look right here. I have to take charge and do something to manage these prices," said Kateri Callahan, of the Alliance to Save Energy.

For example, it is in the driver's best interest to make sure your car is in it's best running condition by ditching extra weight in your trunk and slowing down.

"If the price you're paying at the pump is four dollars and you're driving 65 mph, you're paying $4.60 for that gallon of gas," said Callahan.

In fact, aggressive driving can run up your fuel usage by 33 percent, as can using the wrong type of oil or gas. "If your car takes regular and you're using supreme, you're throwing money out the window," said Callahan.

In these tough times, driving smarter is a triple win. It helps the environment while extending your dollars and the life of your car.
