An 11-member advisory panel is endorsing a design for the District's quarter.
During a meeting Tuesday at the U.S. Mint, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee selected the design featuring scientist Benjamin Banneker. The design was chosen over two other finalists, featuring abolitionist Frederick Douglass and musician Duke Ellington.
The D.C. government and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts also will be consulted before the final decision is made by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.
District officials say they plan to seek public comment in the coming weeks.
