A new survey finds Maryland and Virginia drivers rank high in people who text while driving.
In a survey released Wednesday, nearly 30 percent of drivers across the nation text while driving. Maryland drivers ranked fourth in the survey with a total of 36 percent of texters, while Virginians ranked sixth with almost 36 percent.
The online survey of 4,820 people was commissioned by Vlingo, a Cambridge, Mass. company that markets voice-recognition software it says can be used as a substitute for texting.
"You gotta have both hands on the wheel and watch where you're going these days," said Donna Smith. She said she'll stay focused on the road instead of texting.
Eight percent of the participants said they would still text if it was an illegal act and 78 percent said that texting while driving should be illegal.
The survey found the worst offenders in South Carolina, where 40 percent say they text and drive. The least offensive were in Arizona.
