D.C. Department of Transportation (web|news) is looking into converting one-way streets into two-way streets, according to WTOP Radio.

DDOT wants to protect neighborhoods from fast traffic, as more people bike and walk to work with the high price of gas.

DDOT is looking at converting 15th Street NW between Massachusetts Avenue and W Street/Florida Avenue/New Hampshire Avenue NW.

"This would be a traffic calming effort. We are really looking at mechanisms that will invite residents to want to live on certain corridors and in certain areas," DDOT spokesperson Karyn LeBlanc told WTOP.

The 15th Street study said in the 1960's, many of D.C.'s two-way streets were converted into one-way streets to move large numbers of behicles in and out of the city. As the times change and less people travel the road, some motorists take advantage and speed down the roads.

D.C. Council was presented the plans by DDOT Director Emeka Moneme on May 28.

Councilmembers Jack Evans and Muriel Bowers said they want even more one-way streets turned into two-way traffic.
