Greater Southeast Community Hospital has made a new start.
New owner Specialty Hospitals of America has given the hospital a new name to go along with more than $12 million in taxpayer funded renovations and upgrades.
The hospital is now called United Medical Center. The name was chosen over two other finalists in a vote by employees.
It is the District's only hospital east of the Anacostia River and opened in 1966 as Cafritz Memorial Hospital. It faced bankruptcy twice, beginning in the late 1990s, causing a decline in care and staffing.
The upgrades include a new roof and generators, improvements in the emergency room and the replacement of nearly all radiology equipment.
