(Sports Network) - Six former University of Toledo athletes
and two Detroit-area businessmen were indicted on federal charges in
connection with an alleged point-shaving scheme on Wednesday.
U.S. District Court in Michigan released the 30-page, 20-count indictment
charging Ghazi Manni and Mitchell Karam with paying money and other things of
value from December 2004 to December 2006 to the six other defendants in
exchange for information and for the facilitating of the "point shaving"
scheme to "fix" University of Toledo men's football and basketball games.
Former members of the teams involved in the scandal include Adam Cuomo, Keith
Triplett, Anton Currie, Kashif Payne, Harvey McDougle Jr. and Quinton
Broussard.
It's alleged the aforementioned players Cuomo, Triplett, McDougle Jr. and
Broussard both aided and attempted to recruit other members of the two
programs to join the conspiracy. Triplett, Currie, Payne and Broussard were
singled out as players who allegedly influenced and controlled events during
games to determine the point spread.
Currie, Payne, McDougle Jr. and Broussard were charged with providing
information not in the public domain for the purpose of deciding whether an
attempt should be made to "fix" a particular game.
In addition, Manni, Cuomo, Currie, Payne, McDougle Jr. and Broussard were
charged with unlawful use of interstate facilities.
It's believed that Manni and Karam wagered in excess of $400,000 on University
of Toledo basketball games alone. The defendants face up to five years in
prison and up to $250,000 in fines.
