ROCKVILLE, Md. - Family and friends of a hospitalized Montgomery County
(web | news) paramedic are raising money to bring him home from Idaho.
Scott Doyle, 34, has been in a coma since May 10, when his parachute lines twisted during a BASE jump in Idaho.
"He was very careful. He was meticulous in what he did," said Lt. Jason Giza, a firefighter and friend.
Doyle's wife Steph is by his side in Idaho. They've been married about a year. Friends say she jumped off the cliff right before her husband had his accident.
She and his colleagues are pulling together and doing all they can to bring him home because his insurance doesn't cover the cost of the medevac flight. They've raised about $8,000 and need $20,000 more.
Back at the station, friends are pitching in to cover his shifts.
"People are really going above and beyond," said fire Lt. Sam Villani. "We've received an overwhelming response and we have his shifts covered now through July."
Doyle also plays bagpipies in the county firefighters' Pipes and Drums corps. His bandmates performed Tuesday at the swearing-in of the new fire chief. They had to do so without their friend.
At the end of the month, firefighters will host a fundraiser in Frederick, where Doyle and his wife live. They've also ordered 500 green rubber bracelets. The message on the bands will read "Wake up Scott".
The pipes and drum corps has set up a Web site to collect donations,
