LARGO, Md. - Business women in Prince George's County spent the day focusing on themselves. The Women's Business and Wellness Conference gave female entrepreneurs an opportunity to network and take a break from everyday stresses.

"We are business owners, we are wives we are community leaders, so we're always on, we're always going," said Dawn Jackson, president of Women Business Owners of Prince George's County.

Keeping up this momentum isn't easy during tough economic times. Deborah Crimes, CEO of Lessons From Abroad, says her language institute took a hard hit this year.

"We see about 30-plus students in Spanish and another 15 in French each year, and I would say we have one-third of that in terms of enrollment," said Crimes.

She's now looking for more ways to grow her business by setting some personal goals. "I'm going to get certified, my DOT certification, so I can start working with the public sector more."

On Tuesday, Crimes joined nearly 200 women entrepreneurs from Prince George's County on a day designed just for them.

"It's almost interlaced it with an attitude that we're not going to participate in the recession because just as we have to get up in the morning and brush our teeth and wash our faces, we also have to run our businesses," noted Dawn.

The Women's Business and Wellness Conference offered the resources to do just that through seminars, yoga and even massages.

"We're taking the time out for ourselves so that we can run our businesses and the rest of our lives," said Jackson.

A session on social media marketing had one of the largest turnouts. "People are looking for ways of being able to do something different -- making them stand out," said Jenny Meyer of Helloworld Video.

Relaxed, informed, and more connected, these women say they're ready to get back to work.

The conference was a one-day event but sources say anyone who missed it can find the resources they need for running a business in the county by visiting the Economic Development Corporation office in Largo.
