BELTSVILLE, Md. - Strong storms rolled through the D.C. area Monday night, resulting in flash floods and trapping some motorists. ABC7 cameras were there as drivers stranded by the suddenly high waters were pulled to safety.
Swift-moving water scared one motorist suddenly trapped at Baltimore Avenue and Prince George's Avenue. Firefighters responded but the waters receded as suddenly as they had surged, allowing the motorist to walk to safety.
Flash floods hit near Ammendale Road and Route 1 as Memorial Day turned into a complete washout for four men in an SUV. They were on their way home when, deciding to bypass the road barriers set up on Ammendale Road at Baltimore Avenue to keep drivers out of the floodwaters, they got trapped by the rushing flood.
"The car stopped in the middle of the water," said Arturo Sanchez, a Hyattsville resident.
Firefighters and emergency crews assisted the four men in reaching dry land.
It was a similar scene just miles away on Sunnyside Avenue as more motorists found themselves battling the rushing water.
New Carrollton resident John Walen and two other drivers stayed in their cars, stranded and waiting for help. "I came down this road and it turned into a flood, basically it turned into a complete flood," he said.
"We knew not to get out. We made all the measures that [needed] to be done and we were stuck -- we were stuck completely," added Walen.
The Swift Water Rescue Team got three people out of the three vehicles safely.
