(Sports Network) - Karine Ruby, the first Olympic women's Olympic snowboarding champion in Nagano in 1998 and a silver medalist at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, passed away in a mountain climbing accident on Friday. She was 31.
Ruby died after a climbing accident on Mont Blanc, which is the highest mountain in the Alps and in Western Europe. The French Olympic Committee disclosed the news on Friday.
Fabien Saguez, technical director of the French Ski Federation, said he remembered Ruby's return from Nagano and the celebration that ensued. "It epitomized what we are fighting for," said Saguez. "She will be missed terribly."
According to several media reports, Ruby and a group of climbers were near Chamonix, France when the accident took place. Two climbers, including Ruby, were killed, when they fell into a crevasse, and another was seriously injured.
