(Sports Network) - Kansas City Royals catcher John Buck was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a slight herniation in his lower back, and the club recalled backstop Brayan Pena to take his spot in the lineup.
Buck was taken to St. Luke's Hospital after experiencing back pain prior to his at-bat in the third inning of Saturday's 5-3 loss to the White Sox. The catcher was still in the hospital on Sunday.
Buck was hitting .226 with three homers and 19 RBI in 28 games while playing second fiddle behind the plate to starting catcher Miguel Olivo.
Pena owns a .307 batting average with four home runs and 18 RBI in 22 games for Triple-A Omaha. He appeared in four games for the Royals, going 2-for-7 before being designated for assignment on April 24.
