HazMat Crews Evacuate D.C. Apartments Because of Sewage

HazMat crews in D.C. have evacuated an apartment building in the 1600 block of New Jersey Avenue, Northwest, because of raw sewage and toxic mold. Crews from the Environmental Crimes Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department, D.C. Fire and EMS, WASA are on scene. Investigators says a crawl space below the building is filled with sewage and mold.

Residents say they have been complaining about the problem for a year. DCRA inspectors admit there have been numerous complaints. The department says it has cited the building's owner numerous times for failing to repair the plumbing.

The Red Cross is providing housing to the displaced residents.
