Palfrey Attorney Asks Judge to Dismiss Prostitution Case
posted 9:11 pm Sat June 16, 2007 - Washington
The attorney for the woman accused of being the D.C. madam is asking a federal judge to dismiss the charges that his client ran an illegal prostitution ring.
Lawyer Preston Burton writes in a court filing that Deborah Jeane Palfrey is the victim of selective prosecution. He says it's obvious from any Washington-area publication that there are hundreds of escort services operating in D.C.
Burton says Palfrey can't be held responsible for consensual sex between adults - even if it happened after she arranged escort services. He says the government should drop its charges of racketeering and conspiracy because prosecutors haven't produced any evidence of those crimes.
Last month, the Supreme Court denied a request to halt the criminal case against Palfrey. No explanation was given.
