Virginia DMV, Agencies Reopen After Computer Crash

The state's central computer system was fully restored Thursday, one day after a crash forced the Department of Motor Vehicles to close its customer service centers.
Marcella Williamson, spokeswoman for the Virginia Information Technology Agency, said the problem was with a controller, which connects the mainframe computers to other systems.
The resulting data processing backlog affected a number of agencies, including the Virginia Employment Commission and the departments of Social Services, Taxation and Transportation, Williamson said.
The crash did not result in a loss of data and all state agencies were back in business, Williamson said Thursday. VITA would continue to monitor the system closely and would install backup hardware during scheduled maintenance this weekend, she said.
DMV's customer service centers conduct about 20,000 transactions a day. The computer failure also prevented customers from completing DMV transactions over the Internet and touch-tone telephone systems.
