WE HAVE AN I-TEAM UPDATE TONIGHT.
A WATCHDOG GROUP IS WARNING CONSUMERS NOT TO BELIEVE EVERYTHING THEY READ ON EGG CARTONS.. ESPECIALLY ON SOME OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE BRANDS.
IT'S A STORY ABOUT LABELING DECEPTION THAT ROBERTA BASKIN FIRST BROKE LAST MONTH.. AND SHE'S HERE WITH THE DETAILS.
Roberta Baskin on set:
Well, Gordon and Leslie, Thursday the Center for Science in the Public Interest is calling for the Food and Drug Administration to step in and enforce its own rules against marketing eggs as good for your heart.
Story:
Seven brands of eggs proudly display their special ingredient..Omega 3 .. fed to chickens so they produce a better egg .. these cartons say .. healthier for your heart than ordinary eggs. Many consumers like how that sounds, and shell out the money.. for eggs that cost TWICE as much.
But, Michael Jacobson, sometimes called America's food cop.. says consumers are being conned.
Michael Jacobson, Center for Science in the Public Interest: "consumer…being cheated…"
Fish is a much better source of Omega 3 than eggs, Jacobson says, especially because eggs are rich in cholesterol and saturated fat - and can increase the risk of heart disease.
Michael Jacobson: "The amounts of Omega three fatty acids is so small."
To get the Omega 3's in this piece of salmon, you have to eat a dozen eggs.
The Food and Drug Administration rules prohibit heart-healthy claims for foods with cholesterol, and Jacobson is calling on the agency to enforce its own rules.
Michael Jacobson: "The FDA has become a toothless tiger, a toothless pussycat…it's unfortunate … because people are being bilked .. out of money .. being told these eggs help fight heart diseases…AND THAT IS NOT TRUE."
He says the egg carton claims are just as absurd as claiming cigarettes are good for you.
Michael Jacobson: "It's like smoking filter cigarettes to prevent cancer. It doesn't work."
Roberta Baskin on set:
Food and Drug Administration told us they cannot comment while the Center's complain is being reviewed. The egg companies were not available for comment Thursday.
