D.C. Residents Call for More Spanish-Speaking Officers
posted 5:10 pm Sat June 23, 2007 - Washington
Leaders within D.C.'s latino community say the city needs more police officers who speak Spanish.
"The police department should get more police officers that speak Spanish to make sure that there is compliance with the Language Access Act and to build more trust within the community," said Saul Solarzano, of the Central American Resource Center."
The comments come in response to published reports and rumors that the D.C. Police Department's Latino Liason unit is closing, but the department denies these rumors.
Eugenio Arene says that this is not the only issue when it comes to Latino police officers. He wants to see more Latino officers hired, and promoted throughout the department.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says she actually wants to expand and increase the number of police officers in the department's Latino Liaison unit. Reports indicate that she plans to spread the unit's officers throughout the city rather than having having them based out of Adam's Morgan.
The Latino Liaison Unite was established in 2002 to provide specific services to Latino speaking community throughout the District.
