The D.C. Council has rejected Mayor Adrian Fenty's proposed emergency ban on the sale or private use of fireworks in the District.
Council members defeated the proposal in an 11-2 vote Tuesday night.
Only professional fireworks displays would have been permitted if the ban had passed. But council member Marion Barry said a ban would be unfair to vendors who have purchased their products for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.
The city already prohibits the private use of fireworks that shoot into the sky.
