Animal control officers removed dozens of cats from a Vienna woman's home after receiving a tip from the Human Society, police said in a statement.

The officers went to the home in the 400 block of Nelson Drive NE to perform an animal welfare check after the Front Royal Human Society called to report a woman who had brought in as many as 70 cats to be spayed or neutered.

When the officers approached the home, they say they spotted cat excrement and cat litter on the floor, as well as a deceased cat, said police.

Investigators say they eventually made contact with the homeowner, identified as 30-year-old Anisa Mustafa, who let the officers into the home.

The officers say they found 47 cats in the home, including five kittens. They were taken to the Fairfax County (web|news) Animal Shelter.

Mustafa was issued a summons for improper care of animals and released.
