(Sports Network) - Diana Taurasi poured in 29 points, as the defending champion Phoenix Mercury notched their first win of the season, downing the Washington Mystics, 98-93. Cappie Pondexter scored 23 points, while Tangela Smith finished with 16 points and nine rebounds for Phoenix, which lost its first four games of the season. Kelly Miller chipped in 11 points and five assists.
Alana Beard scored a game-high 33 points and dished out seven assists for the Mystics, who have dropped two in a row. Nakia Sanford had 15 points, while Taj McWilliams-Franklin added 10 points and nine boards. Monique Currie donated 13 points in the loss, which dropped Washington's record to 2-4.
