A popular waiter with Red Robin at the Lake Forest Mall was killed while walking home from work, leaving co-workers and friends shocked and a murderer on the loose.
By all accounts, Longyuan Wang loved his job as a waiter at the restaurant. Everybody called him by the nickname Mooney, but they said it didn't really reflect his personality. "He could have been called Sunny and it would have been the same thing. He's not like dark at all. He's gonna be missed," said Victoria McConnell.
Word of Mooney's death reached his friends at work as the restaurant opened and the new hit hard. "Right now, everybody is tore up," said one worker.
According to police, Wang was walking the few blocks home from work at abut 11 p.m. When two men approached on Fifeshire Court in Montgomery Village It was an armed robbery. There was a confrontation and Mooney was stabbed. He died on the scene.
Police were back a day later searching for clues when they found a knife, a potential murder weapon. They have no suspects, only a vague description of two men, who may have been Hispanic or Asian. Both were seen running from the crime.
"It's real bad. Nobody could ever expect that to happen to them. They hear about it happening to other people and then all of a sudden you get a phone call at 11 in the morning saying one of your friends is now gone," said McConnell.
Police are appealing to the public for help and there is a reward being offered up to $1,000.
