High gas prices are forcing some people to think twice before heading out to the beach this summer, but Ocean City is fighting back.

The Maryland coastal town has started airing some unique commercials telling people to come visit before the ocean disappears.

Sky high gas prices and concerns about the economy make for tense times in resorts such as Ocean City, but a new ad about the oceans disappearing aim to get people laughing and longing for the beach.

"I'm Mayor of Ocean City. In one billion years the oceans will evaporate."

The mayor of Ocean City, Richard Meeh appears in a grainy and goofy ad which mimics the science fiction flicks of the fifties.

"The sun is pulling the planet closer."

It's based on science, but with people all across the region baking in a heat wave, the goal isn't to educate but to entice.

In Ocean City, advance bookings are down this summer. A quarter of hotel reservations for Memorial Day came in just before the start of the long weekend.

With or without the "out there" ad, the hot weather already had a lot of people in the mood for a trip to the beach.
