Severe weather tore through the metro area Tuesday evening, toppling trees, knocking out power, and generating intense lightning blamed for several house fires.

The first home was hit in the 7100 block of Beverly Street in Annandale. Fire officials said damage appeared to be limited to the siding on the home and a shed. An ABC 7/NewsChannel 8 crew captured images of firefighters spraying down the two structures. No injures were reported.

In the second incident, shortly before 9 p.m., another Annandale home was hit. It happened in the 4900 block of Wakefield Chapel Road. No injuries were reported, but the house did suffer damage, according to reports.

In the District, the damage continued at the intersection of 22nd Street and Constitution Avenue NW. A tree fell and landed on an SUV, occupied by a woman. She was treated at the scene of the incident. Park Police shut down the intersection until the tree and car were removed.

The lightning strikes continue in Arlington County where fire officials said it appeared a telephone pole was hit at the intersection of 19th Street and South Kenmore Street. The pole may have caught fire, according to fire officials. It's not clear if power was knocked out.

The Lovettsville area was victim to downed trees on roads, according to reports in the Washington Post. They also reported dropping temperatures across the region, as sharply as 20 degrees in just hours. Hail was reported across northern Virginia and as much as a half of an inch of rain dropped in some places.

The strong storms also knocked out power to more than 50,000 customers across the region. By Wednesday morning, Dominion Power reported 1,100 outages in northern Virginia. Pepco reported more than 900 D.C. residents, 300 Montgomery County (web|news) customers and 1800 Prince George's County residents in the dark.
