A group of Indian workers plans to rally at the Department of Justice Wednesday over claims that they are victims of human trafficking.
Nearly 100 welders and pipefitters are suing their former employer, Signal International. They say recruiters made false promises, telling them that in exchange for $20,000 they would get permanent U.S. residency to work for Signal - an oil rig construction and repair company based in Mississippi. Instead, they only received temporary visas.
The company says that if the recruiters made false promises, they were acting on their own.
The Justice Department is conducting a criminal civil rights investigation of the company.
The workers are asking the Justice Department to grant them "continued presence" status to let them legally stay in the U.S. while the government investigates their claims.
