The House has passed a measure that would provide long-term funding for Metro. The provision was tacked onto an Amtrak bill that was passed Wednesday. The amendment would authorize $1.5 billion for the system over 10 years, provided Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia also kick in with dedicated funding. Supporters of Metro have long said the federal government should play a role in maintaining and improving it because of its location in the capital and the fact that so many of its riders are federal employees. In the Senate, Oklahoma Republican Tom Coburn is blocking a bill on Metro funding. He says taxpayers from other parts of the country shouldn't have to pay for transit in Washington.
