The United Nations has taken notice of an immigration crackdown in Prince William County (web|news) after an expert in discrimination was scheduled to come and talk, but he never arrived.
A special invitation went out to people selected to speak out about immigration issues in Prince William County to a United Nations investigator, but it never happened. The meeting was also supposed to take place between Prince William County supervisors and the same U.N. investigator.
"We felt that this was an attempt to not only embarrass Prince William County, but the United States," said county chairman Corey Stewart. His office supplied an email from the U.N. investigator saying, "something unexpected of extreme gravity came up, totally outside of my control."
"But given the timing of the matter and his abrupt cancellation we think that he gave into the pressure not to come," said Stewart. He said that pressure came from Virginia Congressman Frank Wolf. "So if the U.N. is going to look at human rights problems, they ought to go to Zimbabwe, Darfur and look at it and the Congo and look at it," said Wolf.
Meanwhile, the group Mexicans Without Borders sent out a letter. It said, "Due to unforeseeable circumstances, Dr. Bustamante has been forced to postpone his trip to Prince William County."
People in the county wait to be heard. "Obviously, it's just more higher than Prince William County," said one store owner.
Officials from Mexicans Without Borders said they are waiting for the U.S. investigator to reschedule his trip to Prince William. United Nations officials have not yet said if the meeting will be rescheduled.
