A D.C. police officer shot a man during a struggle near RFK stadium Wednesday, beginning a night of violence that left eight people wounded, police reported Wednesday.

The officer was called to the 2000 block of C Street NE about 7:30 p.m. for the report of a man staggering in the road.

The officer struggled with a man, police said. Investigators believe the man used the officer's police baton to strike the officer on the head several times. According to police, the officer then fired one round, injuring the man in the shoulder.

The man was said to be in critical condition. Police say the officer's injuries are not considered life-threatening. Both were sent to Washington Hospital Center.

It was the first incident in a violent night across the city.

About 10:20 p.m., police were called to the 4400 block of Quarles Street NE for the report of a drive-by shooting. A 12-year-old boy was shot in the wrist when someone opened fire on a group of people standing on a corner. the boy's wounded was not considered life-threatening.

About 10:45 p.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 600 block of Park Road NW, about a block from the Third Police District Substation. One man had been shot in the leg. Police believe another man who sought treatment at Washington Hospital Center's MedStar unit was also wounded in the incident.

The fourth shooting happened about an hour later in the 5100 block of Fitch Street NE. A woman suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower back.

Just after midnight, a man was shot in an alley behind a carryout restaurant in the 2100 block of Alabama Avenue SE. The man was wounded in the shoulder. No motive was given for the attack.

About 1 a.m., a group of gunmen attacked a man and a 19-year-old woman in the 2700 block of Douglass Place SE.  The two were standing in a parking lot when at least three gunmen approached and opened fire, police said.  The victims sought shelter inside the apartment building, but the rounds penetrated the building. The woman's head was grazed by a bullet.
Investigators found shell casings from two handguns and a shot gun on the scene.

The final victim walked into Greater Southeast Community Hospital with a gunshot wound to his back. The victim told police he had been attacked at the Southern Avenue Metro station, in Temple Hills. Prince George's County police are investigating.

It's going to be a long hot summer for the Police.  The animals will be on the prowl so they need to be prepared to put them down.  I would never go into the city after dark.  Too many criminals in our "capital city".
