D.C. police will continue to operate their checkpoint in Northeast Washington through Sunday.
The checkpoint in the Trinidad neighborhood began June 7 and was scheduled to end Wednesday. However, Assistant Police Chief Diane Groomes says Chief Cathy Lanier (web|news|bio) has decided to extend it.
The checkpoint creates a neighborhood safety zone, following a recent spike in homicides. Police have been asking drivers why they are in the area, checking licenses, and taking phone numbers.
While police say the checkpoint has reduced crime, civil libertarians are concerned about the constitutionality of the process.
